Kepa Bush is a protected natural area recognised for its ecological importance. As both a Significant Ecological Area (SEA) and a Biodiversity Focus Area (BFA), it represents one of the remaining patches of an endangered forest ecosystem in Auckland. The bush forms a vital ecological corridor, supporting native wildlife and connecting green spaces across the wider Pourewa Valley landscape.
Friends of Kepa Bush have been actively keeping the pests low in Kepa Bush since 2005, and as of May 2026, there have been 94 hedgehogs, 827 mice, 864 rats and 357 possums trapped over these years.
